Food is a major factor determining the course of human history

A thoroughly enjoyable book review.

Amplifyd from www.spiked-online.com
History shows - from the defeat of Napoleon in Russia to the collapse of the Soviet bloc in the late Eighties - that the availability of food plays a central role in defining the course of events. Like Standage’s previous books, An Edible History of Humanity is a highly readable combination of big themes and engaging stories that reminds us that if the problem of food has been solved in the past, it will still need to be solved again and again in the future.Read more at www.spiked-online.com

When we lose control we seek patterns to regain control, even if they are illusory

Defining “illusory pattern perception” (what I call “patternicity”) as “the identification of a coherent and meaningful interrelationship among a set of random or unrelated stimuli … (such as the tendency to perceive false correlations, see imaginary figures, form superstitious rituals, and embrace conspiracy beliefs, among others),” the researchers’ thesis was that “when individuals are unable to gain a sense of control objectively, they will try to gain it perceptually.” As Whitson explained the psychology to me, “Feelings of control are essential for our well-being—we think clearer and make better decisions when we feel we are in control. Lacking control is highly aversive, so we instinctively seek out patterns to regain control—even if those patterns are illusory.”Read more at www.scientificamerican.com

Why go to Mars? Why take the trouble at all.

Amplifyd from www.thespacereview.com
In a world that is struggling with political solutions to big problems like the environment, hunger, poverty, and disease, we need a challenge like Mars now more than ever. We need to “sharpen up”, so let’s do something worthy of the effort, and something with the payoff equal to the effort put in. Mars, however we get there—be it a direct path or via the Moon, and with government programs or through private commercial space development—should be in our sights, for it has the potential to change our world in ways that we dearly need now.Read more at www.thespacereview.com
